Seeding Between Two Rivers
Hydroseeding in Washougal happens between two rivers. The city sits on the north bank of the Columbia, and the Washougal River runs along the north side of downtown, separating the city from Camas. About 0.88 of Washougal's 6.30 square miles is water, and it is the southernmost incorporated place in Washington.
Riverside lots
When Lewis and Clark camped near the Washougal River in April 1806, they nicknamed it the Seal River for the seals they saw. Today the river supports steelhead and salmon fishing, which is a good reason to keep construction mud out of it. Lots that drain toward the river or the Columbia get silt fence on the low side and seed with tackified mulch soon after grading.
A mild, dry summer
Washougal is classed as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with no monthly average above 71.6 degrees. Rain returns in fall, which is when new lawns get started most easily; spring seeding works too if you are ready to water through the dry months.
From mill town to bedroom community
A textile mill opened in 1910 and was bought by Pendleton Woolen Mills two years later. In the later 20th century Washougal became a bedroom community for Vancouver and Portland, growing more slowly than Camas. That slower pace means many yards are older and ready for renovation, overseeding or regrading rather than a builder's first lawn.
Parks and creeks
Angelo Park, Beaver Park, Campen Creek Park and Hathaway Park are the larger city parks. Where a yard borders a park or a creek, we keep bare soil contained on the property until the grass holds.

Washougal Questions
Our yard runs down to the Washougal River. How do we protect it?
Leave streamside plants alone, put silt fence above them and cover the disturbed soil with seed and a tackified mulch or blanket.
Is it better to renovate or replace an older lawn?
If the grade is good and the soil is decent, overseeding and aeration is usually enough. Bumpy, poorly drained yards may need regrading first.
What time of year should a Washougal lawn be seeded?
Early fall, when rain returns and the soil is still warm. Spring works with a watering plan.
Do you also work in Camas?
Yes, across both cities and the surrounding area.
