Seeding Flat Ground in the Tualatin Valley

Hydroseeding in Hillsboro is shaped by how flat the city is. Its terrain is fairly level, consistent with an agricultural past and the farms still working around it, and the Tualatin River forms part of the southern city limits. Flat ground does not wash away the way a hillside does, but it holds water, and that changes how we prepare a seedbed here.

Grade for drainage first

On level lots the usual problem is puddling, not erosion. Before seeding we fine grade so the yard sheds water away from the foundation toward a swale or drain, and we set topsoil depth so the lawn surface does not end up lower than the walks around it.

South Hillsboro and other new subdivisions

The South Hillsboro planning district covers a newly annexed area built on land once used as a hobby farm by William Ladd and Simeon Reed. New construction there means bare lots and stockpiles through the rainy months. We install silt fence along lot lines that drain to streets, protect storm inlets and hydroseed disturbed areas so builders are not chasing mud.

Creeks through town

Besides the Tualatin, Hillsboro's streams include Dairy Creek, McKay Creek, Rock Creek, Dawson Creek and Turner Creek. Lots bordering them get sediment control and a tackified mulch so soil stays out of the water while the grass fills in.

Rain on 161 days

Hillsboro averages precipitation on 161 days a year, wettest from November through March, with about 38 inches a year over the 1930-1998 record. That is plenty for germination in fall and spring; the gap is midsummer, when a new lawn needs regular watering.

Hillsboro Questions

Do flat Hillsboro lots need erosion control?

Less than slopes, but bare soil still moves in heavy rain. Silt fence and inlet protection keep it out of streets and storm drains during construction.

My new South Hillsboro yard puddles. Will hydroseed fix it?

Seed will not fix the grade. We regrade or add topsoil so the water drains, then hydroseed.

Can you seed next to Rock Creek or Dawson Creek?

Yes. We keep a sediment barrier on the creek side and use mulch with tackifier so it holds through rain.

When should I seed in Hillsboro?

Early fall and spring, when rain is reliable. Summer seeding needs a watering plan.
