Seeding Against the East Wind
Hydroseeding in Troutdale has to account for wind. The city is known for some of the windiest conditions in the Pacific Northwest, with strong east winds coming out of the Columbia River Gorge from time to time. Those winds dry the surface of a new seedbed and can lift loose mulch, so the tackifier rate matters more here than on sheltered lots across the metro.
Mulch that stays put
On exposed lots we raise the tackifier in the slurry, or use a bonded fiber matrix, so the cover sticks to the soil rather than drifting into the neighbor's yard. We also time the work for calm days and water lightly after spraying when the forecast calls for an east wind.
Two rivers
Troutdale sits where the Sandy River meets the Columbia. Glenn Otto Park, on the Sandy's bank, is one of the city's busiest parks. Yards and sites that drain toward either river need silt fence and quick ground cover, because bare soil on a riverbank does not wait for spring.
Industrial ground and new jobs
The Reynolds aluminum plant opened in 1941 for the war effort and closed in 2000; development at the Port of Portland's Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park has since made the city a regional jobs center. Large commercial pads like these need erosion control on cut and fill slopes, inlet protection and broad-area hydroseeding to close out the job.
A cool, dry summer
Troutdale is classed as a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with no monthly average above 71.6 degrees. Summers are mild but dry, so a lawn seeded in spring still needs steady watering through July and August.

Troutdale Questions
Will the east wind blow my new hydroseed away?
Not if the mulch is tackified properly. On exposed lots we increase the tackifier or use bonded fiber matrix and avoid spraying on windy days.
Do you hydroseed large commercial pads?
Yes, along with silt fence, inlet protection and slope cover on cuts and fills.
My lot slopes toward the Sandy River. What do you recommend?
Silt fence on the low side, a blanket on any steep bank and seeding as soon as the grading is done.
Is spring seeding OK in Troutdale?
Yes, with a watering plan, because summers are dry even when they are mild.
