Timing Seed for Vancouver Weather
Hydroseeding in Vancouver follows the same broad pattern as Portland, with one difference that matters for new grass: cold. Pressure east of the Cascades drives cold east winds down the Columbia River Gorge, and without the Willamette Valley's shelter, Vancouver has historically run colder, including silver thaw storms when freezing rain coats trees and lines. A seedling caught by an ice storm in its first month does not do well.
When to seed
Average precipitation is about 42 inches a year. Rain usually stops around mid-June and the dry, warm weather lasts through September. That points to early fall seeding, after the first rains and well before the east winds and frost, or spring seeding with a watering plan. Late fall seeding is a gamble here.
Low ground and floods
The city sits on the north bank of the Columbia, in Washington's Western Lowlands. Periodic floods have been a problem, with destructive ones in June 1894 and May 1948. Riverside and low lots get grading for drainage and silt fence along the low side whenever soil is bare.
Burnt Bridge Creek and Vancouver Lake
Burnt Bridge Creek, which the old Orchards trolley crossed at 33rd Street, and Vancouver Lake, beside the SR 501 corridor, both collect runoff from nearby ground. Construction sites that drain to either need sediment control in place before grading starts.
East side growth
After the 1997 annexation, Vancouver is often described as split into East and West Vancouver along NE Andresen Road, and a 2025 proposal would add about 56 square miles more. More than a third of the urban area's people live in unincorporated communities north of the city such as Hazel Dell, Felida, Orchards and Salmon Creek. New lots across that whole area need first lawns, slope cover and silt fence.

- Dry season. Rain usually stops around mid-June, with dry, warm weather through September; annual precipitation is about 42 in.
- Floods. The most destructive Columbia floods here came in June 1894 and May 1948.
- Annexation. After the 1997 annexation the city is often described as split into east and west at NE Andresen Road.

Vancouver Questions
Is October too late to seed in Vancouver?
Early October can work. Later than that, cold east winds and frost often catch young grass.
Does an ice storm kill new hydroseed?
It can damage seedlings that have not rooted. Seeding early enough for a few mowings before winter avoids most of the risk.
We live near Burnt Bridge Creek. What erosion control do we need?
Silt fence on the creek side and cover on bare soil as soon as grading is done; check your permit for specifics.
Do you work in Hazel Dell, Felida and Salmon Creek?
Yes, both inside the city limits and in the unincorporated areas around them.
