Lawns Above and Below the Bluff
Hydroseeding in Oregon City depends a lot on which level of town you live on. The lower area is a bench beside the Willamette River; the upper area sits on a bluff of Canemah basalt that flowed about 2.5 million years ago from a vent in the Boring Lava Field. The city built a municipal elevator in 1915 just to connect the two.
Bluff-top and bluff-edge lots
Neighborhoods like McLoughlin and Park Place sit on the bluff. On those lots the edge is the risk: we keep fill and heavy equipment back from it, direct downspouts and runoff away from the face, and protect any disturbed bank with a blanket or bonded fiber matrix.
Canemah's narrow strip
Canemah lies along Oregon Route 99E on a narrow strip of land between the river and the bluff. With little room for runoff to spread out, silt fence and careful grading matter more there than on a wide flat lot.
Winter rain
Oregon City averages about 44.81 inches of precipitation a year, concentrated from November to March, while July and August get much less. We plan seeding for early fall or spring and make sure any lot left bare into winter has mulch or blankets on it.
Two rivers
The Willamette runs along the city's northwest side and the Clackamas joins it to the north at Clackamette Park. Lots that drain toward either river need sediment controls during work.

Oregon City Questions
Can you hydroseed near the edge of the bluff?
Yes, carefully. We keep equipment and fill back from the edge, route water away and cover the face with blankets or a bonded fiber matrix.
Is winter a bad time to seed in Oregon City?
Germination slows in the cold and most of the year's rain falls then. Early fall or spring is better; if ground must be covered in winter, use mulch or blankets.
My Canemah lot is narrow. Where does silt fence go?
Along the downhill edge between the work and the road or river, plus protection on any nearby storm inlet.
Do you work in both upper and lower Oregon City?
Yes, on the bench, the bluff and the newer neighborhoods to the east.
